This temple was founded by a Buddhist priest named Doui in 867 under Kyeongmunwang of the Silla dynasty. The Songgwangsa consists of Daeungjeon, the main building, Myeongbujeon, Ungjinjeon, Yaksajeon, Kwaneumjeon, Cheonwangmun and Keumgangmun. The main building is Provincial Treasure # 1243. Its floor is 9.1m by 5.46m and has an angle rafter at every corner of the roof. The design of the building is typical of the construction style of the late years of the Joseon dynasty.
